Hub Installation and Setup
The Hub is the brains of your GRIT system. Install it first — everything else binds to it over a secure mesh network, and all your data stays local to the device.
- Mount the Hub, attach the antenna, plug into a 120V outlet — 5 minutes.
- Pick a central location with 120V power and a clear mesh path.
- Connect over ethernet, your own Wi-Fi, or the Hub's projected Wi-Fi.
- The GRIT App is a PWA hosted on the Hub — not found in the App Store.
Hub Anatomy
Choosing a Location
The Hub can go anywhere it can reach at least one other GRIT device. Keep these in mind so you don't have to relocate it later:
- Go central. The more centrally located the Hub, the better the mesh coverage.
- Plan for your network. Ethernet needs a run to a router or switch; Wi-Fi needs reliable signal at the Hub's location.
- Account for barriers. Thick concrete or metal weakens the mesh. For large facilities, add a Mesh Xtndr to bridge long distances.
- 120V power is required.
Physical Installation
Step 1 — Mount the Hub
Attach the Hub to a wall. If wall mounting isn't an option, it can lay flat on its back on a high shelf.
Step 2 — Attach the Antenna
Screw on the antenna and point it straight up.
Step 3 — Power On
Plug the supplied 5V 4A adapter into the jack on the bottom of the Hub, then into a 120V outlet. Boot takes up to 2 minutes. QR codes appear on the side display once the Hub is ready.
Connecting Your Hub
The GRIT system does not require internet access to operate. Internet is only needed for remote access and software updates — both recommended.
Three connection methods. Pick the one that fits your shop:
| Method | Best For |
|---|---|
| Ethernet | Shops with a wired network near the Hub |
| Personal Wi-Fi | Shops where ethernet isn't practical but Wi-Fi is available |
| Hub's Own Wi-Fi | Shops without an existing network, or for quick standalone setup |
Method 1 — Ethernet
Step 1 — Connect the cable. Plug one end of an ethernet cable into your router or switch, and the other end into the jack on the bottom of the Hub.
Step 2 — Open the GRIT App. Press the button on the side of the Hub to display the GRIT App IP address and QR code. Scan it, or enter the IP manually in your device's native browser.
Step 3 — Create your account. Complete the Create Account form. Enable the optional 4-digit PIN for quick future logins, then press Continue.
Step 4 — Save the app to your home screen for easy future access.
Method 2 — Personal Wi-Fi
To put the Hub on your personal WPA2 network, first connect through the Hub's own projected Wi-Fi, then hand it off to your network.
Step 1 — Connect to the Hub's Wi-Fi. Press the Hub display button until the Connect to HUB WiFi QR code appears. Scan it, or select the grithub- network in your phone's Wi-Fi settings.
Step 2 — Enter the Hub Wi-Fi password: gritautomation (one word, all lowercase). This moves your phone from your regular network onto the Hub's Wi-Fi so you can reach the app.
Step 3 — Open the GRIT App. Press the Hub display button again to show the app IP address and QR code. Scan it, or enter the IP manually.
Step 4 — Create your account. Complete the Create Account form and press Continue.
Step 5 — Hand off to your Wi-Fi. When prompted, confirm you want to connect the Hub to your personal Wi-Fi.
Step 6 — Select your network and enter your password. Pick your network from the list (press Refresh if it isn't shown), then enter the password.
Step 7 — Confirm the connection. A confirmation screen will display when the Hub has switched to your personal Wi-Fi.
Step 8 — Reconnect your phone to that same Wi-Fi network.
Step 9 — Reopen the GRIT App. Press the Hub display button again to show the new IP address and QR code — it will have changed after the switch. Scan or enter manually.
Step 10 — Re-enter your account info in the Create Account form and press Continue.
Step 11 — Save the app to your home screen.
Method 3 — Hub's Own Wi-Fi
Use this to reach the GRIT App directly through the Hub's projected Wi-Fi, without any external network.
Step 1 — Connect to the Hub's Wi-Fi. Press the display button until the Connect to HUB WiFi QR code appears. Scan it, or select the grithub- network in your phone's settings.
Step 2 — Enter the password: gritautomation.
Step 3 — Open the GRIT App. Press the display button again to show the app IP and QR code. Scan or enter manually.
Step 4 — Create your account and press Continue.
Step 5 — Save the app to your home screen.
Hub Button Access
The lock and unlock buttons on the Hub can lock or unlock the entire shop. If the Hub is mounted somewhere physical button access is a safety concern, disable button functionality in the Admin section of the GRIT App.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No QR codes on display after 5+ minutes | Power issue | Verify the adapter is fully seated and the outlet has power. |
Can't find the grithub- Wi-Fi network |
Hub still booting, or phone too far away | Wait for QR codes to appear on the display; move closer to the Hub. |
| Wi-Fi password rejected / Hub needs reset | Password entered incorrectly | Hold the black display button for 20 seconds to clear network settings, then restart Wi-Fi setup. |
| GRIT App shortcut stops working | Phone is on a different network than the Hub | Reconnect your phone to the same network as the Hub. |
