What it means for the shop
Less oversight. More time for members.
A small staff cannot stand beside every machine all day. Wonder Institute uses GRIT to connect a member’s machine permissions to the equipment they can actually turn on.
Less staff oversight
GRIT supports the access rules that let Wonder Institute keep its shop available throughout the week. Staff set permissions for members rather than manually unlocking every tool for every visit.
Tools in approved hands
A member approved for one or two tools can use those tools without gaining access to everything else in the shop. Permissions follow the member when they badge in.
A cleaner shop
Automatic dust collection and air filtration help keep the shop cleaner. Environmental monitoring can activate dust collection or air filtration automatically.
“And we really couldn’t do that without the GRIT system.”

“We’re a relatively small nonprofit with one and a half employees, but the majority of our hours, which are 12 hours a day, seven days a week, the shop is unmonitored.
We could check off a member on one or two tools and not have to worry about them being able to turn on anything else that they weren’t approved to use.
It also helps keep the shop a lot cleaner than I think it otherwise would be with all the dust collection and air filter management built in.
And we really couldn’t do that without the GRIT system.”
The closing recap repeats these original excerpts: “without much oversight,” “we could check off a member on one or two tools,” and “It also helps keep the shop a lot cleaner.”
