Overview

What is a GRIT Gate?

gate/ɡeɪt/noun
  1. A movable barrier that controls passage through an opening.Merriam-Webster

  2. A powered blast-gate control that receives commands from the GRIT Hub, moves a configured duct branch open or closed, and reports operating data back to the Hub.

What every Gate Control does

One job: route airflow to demand.

A tool requests collection, the Hub moves the mapped branch gates, and each Gate Control reports how the movement performed.

Standard metal blast gates

Keep the gate. Add controlled motion.

The bolt-on GRIT Gate Control covers metal blast gates from 2.5 to 12 inches. Nordfab and other Quick-Connect styles can be compatible when the metal slide moves freely and has no built-in locking mechanism. Larger-diameter, heavy-duty assemblies are higher-priced variants of the same Gate Control product, not separate product families.

How it works.

The actuator mounts to the existing gate and drives its slide. A dedicated slide guide keeps the movement linear so the actuator does not pull the gate off-axis. During setup, the gate is calibrated for its open and closed endpoints.

Existing automated gates

Bring iVac gates into the GRIT system.

The iVac Retrofit Gate Control connects an existing iVac gate to GRIT control without replacing the gate or changing the ductwork.

Compact spec

How it works.

The module connects between the existing iVac power supply and gate control input. It lets the GRIT Hub coordinate the installed iVac gate with tools, branch rules, and collector demand.

Configuration

Set the airflow path for each tool.

GRIT software maps tools to branch gates. When a configured tool runs, the Hub can open the gates that serve that branch and close the gates that should not draw airflow. Multiple gates can be assigned to the same tool when the duct layout requires a shared path.

Branch rules

Open and close by tool demand

Define which gates open and which gates close for each running tool. Because the rules live in the Hub, the same physical gate can participate in more than one tool configuration.

Daisy-chain wiring

Share a 12V power run

Gate Controls can be daisy-chained from one gate to the next. The signal path remains wireless through the GRIT Mesh; the daisy chain distributes low-voltage power.

Motion profiles

Tune how movement starts and finishes

Advanced settings can apply a fast start with a slow finish, or a slow start with a faster finish. The appropriate curve depends on gate orientation and helps prevent the slide from slamming into an endpoint.

Calibration and monitoring

Measure stress, not only position

Each gate is calibrated for open and closed positions. The Gate Control monitors operating current to identify stress or binding, and the Hub stores the resulting position, current, and operating metrics for review.

Advanced airflow management

Match collector output to active demand.

In a configured variable-speed system, the GRIT VFD Collector device manages collector operation while the GRIT Velocity system manages airflow and air-speed targets. As different tools and branch gates call for collection, the system can adjust the VFD collector command to the demand represented by the active airflow path.

A 20% reduction in fan speed can theoretically reduce fan power by 48.8%. Actual results depend on the installed fan, duct system, airflow requirements, and operating schedule.

Installation

Retrofit the gate already in place.

Start with a compatible metal gate whose slide moves freely. Mount and align the actuator and slide guide, connect the 12V power run, bind the device to the Hub, then calibrate the open and closed endpoints before normal operation. For an iVac system, connect the retrofit module to the existing iVac power and control path instead of mounting a mechanical actuator.

FAQ

How many gates does one Power Bank power?

There is no single total-gate count that applies to every installation. The practical limit is based on how many gates are commanded to actuate at the same time, not how many gates are connected to the system. Gates that move at different times may share the same 12V GRIT Power Bank through a daisy-chained run. Wiring layout still matters: a long low-voltage run can make wire sizing, voltage drop, and serviceability more important than the connected gate count. In that case, placing an additional Power Bank nearer another group of gates can be the cleaner installation.
